New England foodies rejoice—the Boston Local Food Festival is back for its 10th year!
On Sunday September 15th at 11am, The Rose Kennedy Greenway in the heart of Boston will welcome local farms, food trucks, restaurants, and specialty food vendors who put pride and passion into everything they do. A food festival wouldn’t be worth celebrating without a few hungry Bostonians to enjoy that unique New England flavor, and this year we hope to see more of you discerning diners than ever before.
Since 2010, the Sustainable Business Network of Massachusetts has celebrated the entire local food system of the northeast region by showcasing the importance of locally grown produce. Hailed as one of the top 10 food events in the Boston area, entry is free, and more than 80 vendors will be offering a diverse range of local dairy, meat, produce and fresh cooked dishes made with ingredients grown in the area—all at affordable prices.
Alongside this smorgasbord of sweet and savory delights, there will be chef demos, workshops, and plenty of informational exhibitions to teach you, your friends, and family about the benefits of eating, drinking, and living locally. To top it off, you’ll also find a New England Village, Family Fun Zone, and the highly anticipated Seafood Throwdown competition which is always popular with festival goers!
Healthy Local Food for All!
This year’s festival will focus on “Healthy Local Food for All”, advocating the principles of local, green, and fair while promoting the many benefits of purchasing locally grown products. SBN Mass actively works within the local food system with the goal of reaching 50% of all food eaten by New Englanders sourced from New England by 2060. With an emphasis on healthy balanced diets and food access, this year’s festival will bring together a whole range of tasty samples from local speciality food producers and fresh farm produce that provides high nutritional content without compromising on taste.
Zero Waste and Sustainable Practice
The 10th Annual Boston Local Food Festival is a zero-waste event, and each year SBN Mass strives to reduce waste and promote composting, recycling, and sustainable practices in the local area. In part, this is achieved at a grass roots level by championing initiatives and business practices that mitigate climate change, but also by providing education and training to the wider community at events such as this.
Food waste, in particular, is a big issue for businesses within the restaurant and hospitality industry, and it is estimated that around 11.4 million tons ends up in landfill each year. At this festival, SBN Mass aims to highlight this growing issue, helping local businesses to combat an epidemic that is not only wasting valuable resources, but also costing the industry some $54.7 billion annually. With these figures in mind, the Boston Local Food Festival makes zero waste a priority at the event.
