This year’s Boston Local Food Festival will highlight many unique local businesses, including City Feed and Supply of Jamaica Plain. The festival’s mission is to stress the importance of local food, to support local farms and food-related businesses, to increase access to healthy local food in urban areas, and to foster collaboration among farms, businesses, and local organizations. The festival will include booths where vendors will be offering samples and selling affordable, fresh, local food. Attendees will have the opportunity to talk directly to farmers, and they will experience food demonstrations presented by area chefs. There will be a Family Fun Zone as well as live music performed by local musicians. Admission is free, so come to the Greenway on October 7th and bring your family.
City Feed and Supply, one of the festival’s pioneering sponsors, is a grocery store and deli with two locations in Jamaica Plain. This unique store specializes in local, organic products, including local produce, meat, and artisan cheese. The deli features items with local ingredients from throughout New England. The people at City Feed pride themselves on being part of the fabric of Jamaica Plain, a vibrant community with a strong sense of character. They provide healthy local food options, as well as a place to sit down to a good cup of coffee and conversation. They boast a low carbon footprint, and composting and recycling are a regular part of their day-to-day operations.
City Feed’s mission is to build community through service. According to owner David Warner, “There is no better way to build community than through sharing food, and there is no better food than local food.” They are inspired by community, by the food producers who work so hard to bring great food to the table, and by the folks who work at City Feed with a passion and commitment every day to serve. They are also impressed and inspired by their customers, who have shown great appreciation and support for what City Feed has been doing for the past twelve years.
The owners of City Feed see the Boston Local Food Festival as a great opportunity to share their mission with an even larger community on this one special day. They look forward to celebrating the great abundance and diversity of local food at the festival. This year, City Feed and Supply will once again be sampling and selling New England farmstead cheeses at their booth. If you find yourself in Jamaica Plain, this is one store that you won’t want to miss.
