The Fireplace restaurant in Brookline MA is founded in the spirit of New England. Owner and chef Jim Solomon found the inspiration for the restaurant way back during the bicentennial as a child when he walked on Paul Revere’s path from Lincoln to Concord and met President Gerald Ford on Old North Bridge. Solomon says this moment sparked his lifelong interest in “wood burning cooking, and the bounty of our region” and that his “desire to support local farmers and artisans is a manifestation of my love of Colonial history and [a] celebration” of New England.
The Fireplace is a New England grill and barbeque with the culinary mission to “to buy locally and responsibly” and is excited to be participating in this year’s festival on October 7th. The Boston Local Food Festival’s mission is to bring exposure to and interaction between local and sustainable food, the local economy, and people. The Fireplace shares the festival’s goals of a local, green, and sustainable food economy for Massachusetts.
Solomon understands the complexity of local food in today’s economy and the continuing need to raise awareness through events like the festival. While accessing local food is easier now than it was when the restaurant started in 2001, he believes in the hard work “to source from a variety of farms, cheese makers and fisherman” as well as educate the restaurant’s staff on focusing on local ingredients.
It is also Boston’s first Certified Green Restaurant, sharing in another aspect of the festival mission, to promote not just food sustainability but environmental sustainability. Each year the Boston Local Food Festival strives for a zero-waste goal, with 86% of last year’s waste diverted.
On the October 7th Boston Local Food Festival along The Rose Kennedy Greenway, The Fireplace will be serving an Apple Blackberry Fried Pie, adapted from a favorite pie of New England native and 14th president of the United States Franklin Pierce, and an Herbed Goat Cheese, Roasted Beet & Fennel Fried Pie.
