When a company cares about its product, it shows. It shows in the way they take care of the animals that create their product. It shows in the way they support their local community. It shows in the way they care about their land. It shows in the taste and quality of the product.
This is the case of High Lawn Farm, a dairy farm started in 1920 with only Jersey cows, located in the Berkshires.
Being that I’m a registered dietitian nutritionist, I was fascinated to learn more about what High Lawn refers to as “The Jersey Difference”, which sets them apart from other dairy farms. The Jersey cow originated from Britain’s Channel Islands and High Lawn’s Jersey herd has been nationally recognized as being bred for health, longevity and superior milk production.
Not only does Jersey cow milk taste richer and is better quality, it’s also naturally more nutritious. That’s right – milk from Jersey cows contains 17% more calcium and 20% more protein than milk from Holstein cows. It also contains a higher concentration of vitamins like vitamin A and B vitamins. Plus, the Jersey cows at High Lawn Farm are pasture-fed and it’s been shown that milk from pasture-fed cows contain more omega-3’s and an array of antioxidants.
Plus, these Jersey cows are part of the High Lawn family – they have waterbeds to sleep on, they graze outside during good weather, are never given rBST, and only given antibiotics when absolutely necessary (and no milk is used until their system is clear of the antibiotic), and they have some pretty spectacular views of the rolling hills in the Berkshires.
High Lawn Farm produces milk (whole, low-fat, and fat-free), chocolate milk, heavy cream, butter, ice cream, and eggnog. Look for their products in Berkshire County and in many locations in Massachusetts, Southern New Hampshire and Eastern New York. For a full list of retail stores, visit their website.
I’ve tasted High Lawn Farm’s milk in the past but now that I know more about the Jersey cow and the company’s mission and values, I’ll definitely be picking it up off the store shelf more often.
